Image Buffers Dialog

The Image Buffers dialog is used to configure the number of image buffers allocated to the In-Sight vision system at startup when Overlapped is selected for the Buffer Mode parameter. For more information, see AcquireImage.

Each vision system has a default number of image buffers available for image acquisition and spreadsheet function execution:

  • The first available buffer is used for image acquisition.
  • Once acquisition is complete, another buffer is locked to use for the next acquisition.
  • The buffered image is sent to the spreadsheet for job execution.
  • The buffer stays locked until the job is executed.
  • Some functions (for example, WriteImageFTP and WriteSMTP) may keep a buffer locked after the job is executed, but the spreadsheet can receive another buffered image even if a function has a buffer locked. Buffered images are queued if a job is being executed or if images are queued for display (from In-Sight Explorer or the VisionView application).
Note:
  • The Image Buffers setting has no effect for the vision systems/sensors with Single Buffer Mode enabled, such as In-Sight 2000 series vision sensor EasyBuilder jobs.
  • Setting the number of image buffers in the Image Buffers Dialog is only supported for vision systems running firmware version 4.6.0 and later. If the vision system is running firmware version 4.5.0 and earlier, the SetSystemConfig() Extended Native Mode Command must be used to set the number of image buffers.
  • When in Camera Trigger mode, if a trigger is received but no buffer is available for image acquisition, the image acquisition does not occur. In addition, if a Discrete Output line is configured to use ERR: Missed Acquisition, this signal will be raised for each acquisition until a buffer is available. For more information, see Configure Discrete I/O Lines.
  • If the vision system is configured to use the maximum number of image buffers available, and is also configured to use the Sensor Filmstrip when the vision system is Online, there may not be enough memory available to save filmstrip images to the vision system. In this case, decrease the number of image buffers below the maximum.

Image Buffers Dialog Controls

To display the Image Buffers dialog, click Image Buffers from the Sensor menu.

The slider control allows you to configure the number of image buffers allocated to the vision system at startup. The default and maximum number of image buffers is dependent on the vision system resolution and RAM size. The vision system must be rebooted for the changes to take effect.

Note:
  • To determine the RAM size of the vision system, right-click the vision system within the In-Sight Network pane and click Properties. Within the Properties dialog, select the Memory tab.
  • Increasing the number of image buffers will decrease the amount of RAM available for other tasks, such as loading jobs and acquiring images, and may degrade performance.
  • Additional image buffers are automatically allocated to the In-Sight vision system when the Maximum View Connections setting in the HMI Settings dialog is set to 2 or more. For example, when the Maximum View Connections is set to 2 and the Image Buffers setting is set to 3, 5 image buffers are allocated to the vision system. If the total number of image buffers exceeds the maximum number of image buffers available on the vision system, the maximum number of image buffers are allocated to the vision system. For more information, see HMI Settings Dialog.
  • For the following vision systems/sensors, the resolution can be configured in the Image Settings dialog: In-Sight Micro 1500, In-Sight 2000-130, 2000-130C, 2000-230, 2000-230C, 2000-23M, 2001-230, 2001-230C, In-Sight 7500, 7500C, 7600, 7600C, 7800, 7800C, 7900, 7900C, 7802, 7802C, 7902, 7902C.
  • For the 5604 and 5614 line scan vision systems, the Image Height can be configured in the LineScan Settings dialog.
  • For the 9902L line scan vision system, the 1K Resolution (Low Light Mode) and Max Image Height can be configured in the LineScan Settings dialog.
