Enable Serial Communication: In-Sight 70xx - 74xx
There are two options for enabling serial communication for the In-Sight 70xx - 74xx series vision system:
- Option 1: Breakout Cable
- Option 2: CIO-MICRO or CIO-MICRO-CC I/O module
- For detailed installation instructions and wiring details, refer to the In-Sight® 7000 Series Vision System Installation Manual.
- If hardware handshaking is required, the CIO-MICRO or CIO-MICRO-CC I/O module must be used.
- The vision system must be Online to send/receive serial data.
Option 1: Breakout Cable
The In-Sight 70xx - 74xx series vision system can be connected directly to a serial device using the RS-232 TRANSMIT and RS-232 RECEIVE pins on the Breakout cable. When the vision system is connected to the Breakout cable (and there is no connection to an I/O module), the vision system allows for bi-directional inputs and outputs between discrete and serial:
- Input Line 1 can be configured as either Serial Receive or a general-purpose input; and
- Output Line 1 can be configured as either Serial Transmit or a high-speed output.
- If Input Line 1 is configured as a general-purpose input or Output Line 1 is configured as a high-speed output, the Serial Port Settings dialog controls are still enabled. There is no visual indication that the serial port is not active.
- If Serial Receive is selected for Input Line 1, Serial Transmit is automatically selected for Output Line 1, and vice-versa. In addition, if any other input type is selected for Input Line 1, the line is configured as a general-purpose input and Output Line 1 is automatically reset to a high-speed output using the default output type for this line, and vice-versa.
The steps below assume that:
- The vision system has been properly installed.
- The Breakout cable is connected to the vision system.
- The Breakout cable is connected to a serial device.
-
There is no connection to an I/O module.
Note: For detailed installation instructions and wiring details, refer to the In-Sight® 7000 Series Vision System Installation Manual.
EasyBuilder View
- Launch In-Sight Explorer and log on to the vision system.
- Go to the Inputs/Outputs Application Step.
- Verify that Direct I/O is listed as the attached Module. If not, click the I/O Module button to launch the I/O Module Configuration dialog and connect to Direct I/O.
- For Input Line 1, select Serial Receive from the Edge Type drop-down list.
- Go to the Inputs/Outputs Application Step.
- For Output Line 1, verify that Serial Transmit is selected as the specified Signal Type.
- Go to the Communications Application Step.
- If adding a new device, click the Add Device button and configure the device settings. If editing an existing device, highlight it in the Communications group box and click the Edit Device button.
- Select the Serial Port Settings tab and configure the serial settings.

- Launch In-Sight Explorer and log on to the vision system.
- From the Sensor menu, launch the Discrete I/O Settings dialog.
- Verify that Direct I/O is listed as the attached Module. If not, click the I/O Module button to launch the I/O Module Configuration dialog and connect to Direct I/O.
- For Input Line 1, select Serial Receive from the Type drop-down list. Click OK to close the dialog.
- For Output Line 1, verify that Serial Transmit is the specified Type. Click OK to close the dialog.
- Launch the Serial Port Settings dialog and configure the serial settings. Click OK to close the dialog.
Option 2: CIO-MICRO or CIO-MICRO-CC I/O Module
The In-Sight 70xx - 74xx series vision system supports connecting the Breakout cable and the CIO-MICRO or CIO-MICRO-CC I/O module simultaneously. If the vision system is configured for use with the CIO-MICRO or CIO-MICRO-CC I/O module, the RS-232 TRANSMIT and RS-232 RECEIVE pins on the Breakout cable are disabled. Use the I/O module's RS-232 OUT port (DB9) to connect to a serial device.
The steps below assume that:
- The vision system has been properly installed.
- The Breakout cable is connected to the vision system (to supply power, acquisition trigger and I/O only).
-
The I/O module's RS-232 OUT port (DB9) is connected to a serial device.
CAUTION: When connecting the In-Sight 70xx - 74xx series vision system to the CIO-MICRO or CIO-MICRO-CC I/O module, the I/O module's I/O port (DB15) and TRIGGER+, TRIGGER-, HS OUT 0, HS OUT 1 and HS COMMON terminals are not supported. Do not connect wire leads from remote devices to these terminals.Note:- High-speed outputs on In-Sight 70xx - 74xx series vision systems are only supported when the vision system is connected to the Breakout cable.
- For detailed installation instructions and wiring details, refer to the In-Sight® 7000 Series Vision System Installation Manual.
