Internet Protocol (IP) Address

An IP address uniquely identifies a host on a network. IP addresses belong to one of three types, or classes. The class is generally determined by the number of subnets, and the number of hosts operating on those subnets.

Network Class Maximum Number of Networks
(or subnets)
Maximum Number of Hosts
A 127 16,000,000
B 16,000 65,000
C 2,000,000 254

Like any other host on the network, the IP addresses given to In-Sight sensors must comply with the addressing scheme in effect on an existing network. See your network administrator for the addressing scheme used on your network.

If the network has been created specifically for In-Sight, then the user must choose the network class and assign IP addresses accordingly. The following IP addressing schemes can be used:

Network Class IP Address Range Default Subnet Mask
A 10.0.0.1 to 10.255.255.254 255.0.0.0
B 172.16.0.1 to 172.31.255.254 255.255.240.0
C 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.255.254 255.255.0.0

Most In-Sight users will want to configure a Class C network.
