Link-local IP Address

The purpose of a link-local IP address (also known as an automatic private IP address) is to automatically provide a temporary IP address if a unique dynamic or static IP address is not immediately available. Link-local IP addresses are in the range of 169.254.0.0/16.

Link-local capability is available only on In-Sight devices that support Ethernet configuration with firmware 4.1.0 or later. If necessary, an In-Sight device will assign itself a link-local IP address so that it can connect, or maintain connection, to a PC or a network without any configuration. Examples of when link-local IP addresses are used include:

  • Connecting a new device to a static network.
  • Connecting a new device directly to a PC or a VisionView
  • Connecting a device with a static IP address to a static network, and the IP address is already taken.
  • Maintaining connection to a device with a dynamic IP address when its DHCP server fails.
  • Moving a device from a DHCP network to a static network.
Note:
  • New In-Sight Ethernet devices are factory-configured for installation on an existing network with a DHCP server. For more information, see Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) Server.
  • Because routers cannot pass data to and from link-local IP addresses, replacing them with dynamic or static IP addresses in the Add Sensor/Device to Network dialog is strongly recommended. For more information, see Add Sensor/Device to Network Dialog.
